Watch the Black Keys Awkwardly Meet Charlize Theron in ‘SNL’ Promos
The Black Keys will be providing the music for the Charlize Theron–hosted episode of Saturday Night Live airing this weekend, and they seem to be mildly amused to meet the Oscar-winning, A Million Ways to Die in the West actress. In three promos with cast member Cecily Strong, Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney act cucumber cool while the actresses make puns out of their last names, objectify the band for a Mother’s Day joke and say hello to them. But in each scenario, it’s the rigidness and awkwardness of the Keys, whose new album Turn Blue hits record-store shelves May 13th, that make the bits especially funny.

Turn Blue is streaming early on iTunes Radio and contains 11 tracks that show a wider range for the group, incorporating elements of psychedelia into their typically catchy rock songs. The band took a long time – for them, at least – to work on the follow-up to 2011’s El Camino, and Auerbach told Rolling Stone that the reason for that was because the group was “this-is-your-brain-on-drugs fried.” They found their focus with the album opener “Weight of Love,” and ultimately made what the frontman has described as a “headphone record.”
With regained focus, the group is planning its return to the road with a massive fall tour that will bring them all over North America from September to December. They announced the tour with a tongue-in-cheek “press conference” video in which Auerbach opens himself up to criticism and is only received with laughter. So at least they’ll be ready for laughs at SNL.
