Daft Punk Attend Monaco Grand Prix to Support Their Own Racecar
Daft Punk made an appearance at the Monaco Grand Prix today to support the Lotus F1 Team racing in a car designed in the duo’s image. The British Formula 1 team posted several photos of Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo, decked out in full robot regalia and referred to as “two extra crew members,” in their Twitter feed. Running down the side of the feed is Daft Punk’s dual-helmet insignia along with the phrase “#GETLUCKY.” The team also posted a link to create your own paper Daft Punk cut-out.
Daft Punk: All Hail Our Robot Overlords
As Pitchfork points out, the Lotus F1 team announced in March that it would be partnering with Columbia Records, Daft Punk’s label. News of the Daft Punk-branded racecar, which prominently features the band’s name on its cockpit, came out earlier this week, fresh on the heels of the release of Random Access Memories. A series of cryptic videos featuring Daft Punk in their helmets along with the car appeared on the YouTube page of the Lotus F1 Team. One particularly slick clip was made by music video director Jonas Åkerlund.
Unfortunately, the Daft Punk car did not prove lucky for driver Romain Grosjean, who was forced to retire from the race after a collision.
