Against Me! ‘Piss on the Walls’ in New Single ‘Black Me Out’
With the release of their next record, Transgender Dysphoria Blues, a month away, Florida punks Against Me! have released an urgent-sounding new single, “Black Me Out.” Frontwoman Laura Jane Grace had been playing the track acoustically at concerts as far back as a year ago, but with the aid of her bandmates and their charging guitars and crashing drums, the anthemic track takes on a new dimension. Where a lyric like the song’s chorus, “I want to piss on the walls of your house,” sounding almost folky in an unplugged environment, it takes on a heightened drama amid the rumble of her and guitarist James Bowman’s instruments.

Transgender Dysphoria Blues is the group’s first album since 2010’s White Crosses and its first since Grace came out as transgender to Rolling Stone. The LP comes out January 21st via the band’s own Total Treble label. Many songs on the album address gender dysphoria, which is a clinical term for feeling discontent with one’s sex, among a variety of other topics. The group recorded some of the album at Dave Grohl’s Studio 606 and recorded some tracks with NOFX frontman Fat Mike filling in on bass, including their most recent single, “FuckMyLife666.”
Following some lineup changes, the group settled on a group that features bassist Inge Johansson, formerly of the (International) Noise Conspiracy, and drummer Atom Willard (Rocket From the Crypt, the Offspring), who will be playing with Grace and Bwoman on the band’s 2014 tour.
