Fans Trash Death Grips’ Equipment After Lollapalooza No-Show
Death Grips were scheduled to play at an official Lollapalooza aftershow on Friday night at Chicago’s Bottom Lounge before their performance at the main event on Saturday. Hundreds of fans had packed the sold-out venue, according to Pitchfork, but were told after the opening act had played that the band would not be showing up. The fans reportedly responded by trashing the band’s equipment that had been set up onstage, including a drum kit.
A representative for the venue told Pitchfork that they were not aware of the cancellation until just before they made the announcement. “We just wanted to let everyone know that tickets for last night’s Death Grips show are in the process of being refunded and everyone that bought tickets will have their money back shortly,” the Bottom Lounge said Saturday in a note on Facebook. “We also would like to thank everyone at the show last night for being so incredibly cool about the situation. Despite being very disappointed, everyone at the show was respectful and we just wanted to let you know, that we appreciate your understanding as we were as surprised as you were.”
Behind the Scenes at Lollapalooza 2013
At the time the cancellation was announced, the stage had been set with a backdrop printed with what appeared to be a fan’s suicide note, dated July 9th.
In a note posted to its Facebook page on Saturday, Lollapalooza announced that Death Grips’ headlining set was now off the schedule for the evening. “Death Grips chose not to appear at Lollapalooza 2013,” the note read, before noting that their slot would be filled by Olympic gold medalist Shaun White’s band, Bad Things.
