‘Anchorman 2’ Cast Sing ‘Afternoon Delight’ in Australia
Have you ever wondered what true love sounds like? During the Sydney premiere of Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues, the film’s stars, Will Ferrell, Paul Rudd, Steve Carrell and David Koechner offered a possible answer, reprising their wonderful rendition of Starland Vocal Band’s 1976 hit “Afternoon Delight” for an ecstatic crowd. The quartet famously sang the not-so-subtle love song a capella during the first Anchorman, and nearly a decade later they sound spry as ever, with Carrell still hitting all the right high notes and Koechner nailing his trademark “whoooops.” You can check out this wonderful clip of the KVWN Channel Four News team giving an exclusive one-off performance of the song – “Other theaters, we’re not doing it for,” Ferrell curtly reminded the laughing audience. “Only this once.”
Anchorman 2 is scheduled to arrive in theaters on December 20th, and in a recent interview with Rolling Stone, Koechner said they could have made two new films out of all the footage they shot that didn’t make the final cut – including a giant musical number that would’ve put their “Afternoon Delight” scene to shame.

“We had such a bounty of riches that it was really difficult to decide what was going to go in this thing,” he said. “You know that phrase, ‘Sometimes you’ve got to kill your darlings?’ Well, there were a lot of darlings in this one.” Koechner added: “We seriously made an effort and lobbied to “Kill Bill” this movie and put it out in two parts, but it just didn’t work.”
There’s been plenty of talk since about the long-awaited sequel since Ferrell announced it on Conan and the movie is shaping up to be a doozy, with Harrison Ford and Kristen Wiig both joining the cast and everyone from Tina Fey and Amy Poehler to Drake and Kanye West spotted filming cameos.
Burgundy himself has been on a promotional streak as well: Not only did he just release a memoir, but the newsman recently returned to Conan where he dedicated a rousing rendition of Loverboy’s “Working for the Weekend” to embattled Toronto mayor Rob Ford. Also, on December 4th, Boston’s Emerson College will rename its School of Communication after the beloved anchor and Ferrell will be there, in costume, to help christen the Ron Burgundy School of Communication and impart some wise words to the aspiring journalists. Two days later, he’s rumored to take over ESPN’s flagship show, Sportscenter.
