Grateful Dead Play ‘Jack Straw’ in Veneta, Oregon, in 1972
Back on August 27th, 1972, the Grateful Dead journeyed to Veneta, Oregon, to link up with Ken Kesey and the Merry Pranksters. Hot off a European tour, the Dead joined the author of One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest and his crew for a benefit show for the Kesey family’s Springfield Creamery. The band played through a number of tracks, including “Sugar Magnolia,” “Promised Land” and a 30-minute version of “Dark Star.” The gig became well known to fans as a particularly noteworthy Dead show, living on as the unreleased concert film Sunshine Daydream.
