Hear Juliana Hatfield Three’s New Song About Being ‘Not Easy to Love’
The Juliana Hatfield Three released their debut album, the beloved Become What You Are, in August 1993. Hatfield herself has released or contributed to dozens of LPs since, but only a handful have featured either member of her former band. Now, in the same year that brought the returns of Mad Season, Sleater-Kinney and Babes in Toyland, the original trio is ready to send out their first joint LP in almost 22 years.
Below, hear what will be the record’s penultimate track, a stammering guitar tune addressed to an anonymous partner. Hatfield calls the song “the opposite of ‘I Wanna Sex You Up'” and describes it as being “about numbness and dissociation – feeling like a block of wood.”
“There are mood swings in both mind and body,” the singer tells Rolling Stone. “Like I’ve said before in songs like ‘I Got No Idols,’ sometimes ‘I don’t like to be touched.’ How do you handle it when you feel dead and numb? When your significant other wants affection and you don’t? It’s complicated and mysterious, biological and psychological and emotional.”
The Juliana Hatfield Three‘s new album will be titled Whatever, My Love and released on February 17th via American Laundromat Records. It can be pre-ordered at the ALR website or via iTunes.
