Daft Punk Cancel ‘Colbert’ Performance
Turns out Daft Punk didn’t appear last night for a scheduled performance on The Colbert Report, due to contractual obligations with MTV. Apparently, the duo will be making what was supposed to have been a surprise performance at the MTV Video Music Awards later this month, and headlining StePhest Colbchella would have breached the duo’s contract with Viacom, which owns both Comedy Central and MTV. The performance will be Daft Punk‘s first television appearance since releasing Random Access Memories in May.

Colbert seemed none too pleased to lose his headliner – so much so that he blew MTV’s surprise. (Unless the whole thing was, as some have speculated, a publicity stunt.)
“Here’s the story, and it’s a true story,” Colbert said. “We booked click and clack over here about a month ago, but there was a problem. This network is owned by Viacom, which is also the owner of MTV. . . . Apparently – and this is a deeply guarded secret, so shhhh! – Daft Punk are going to make a surprise appearance on the MTV Video Music Awards – spoiler alert. Don’t tell anyone, because fun fact: no one told me until two o’clock yesterday.”
Robin Thicke came on instead to perform his hit summer single “Blurred Lines.”
The MTV Video Music Awards will air live on August 25th.
