Justin Timberlake Re-Opens Maxwell’s for One Song
Turns out Maxwell’s isn’t completely shut down after all: Justin Timberlake last night shot a Target commercial in the shuttered rock club in Hoboken, New Jersey. “Join me & @Target tonight for just one song. Let’s ‘Take Back the Night.’ First 150 get in. See you there!” Timberlake tweeted just after 7:30 p.m. yesterday, linking to a photo of Maxwell’s and Target accoutrement.
Many more than 150 people showed up: The Jersey Journal reports that thousands of fans gathered around Maxwell’s, which closed after hosting a final show on July 31st. Police tried in vain to keep the streets clear before Timberlake finished the shoot, reportedly around 9 p.m.

Timberlake isn’t the first to film at Maxwell’s: Bruce Springsteen shot part of the video for “Glory Days” at the club, and Jonathan Demme directed the Feelies’ video for “Away” there.
Yo La Tengo, a Maxwell’s mainstay for decades with a string of annual Hanukkah shows, helpfully offered Timberlake smart-aleck tips on Twitter about the club. “Hanukkah was like nine months ago, stupid,” read one tweet, while another said, “There are milk crates downstairs if you need to use one.” A third tweet made reference to the always-dire parking situation around the club: “Your car just got booted while you were onstage.”
