Macklemore and Ryan Lewis Score Six American Music Award Nods
Macklemore and Ryan Lewis lead the nominees for the 41st Annual American Music Awards, picking up six nods including Artist of the Year, New Artist of the Year and Single of the Year for their inescapable smash “Thrift Shop.”
The duo will go up against a slew of more established names, including Taylor Swift, Justin Timberlake, Rihanna and Bruno Mars, who will also contend for Artist of the Year. Meanwhile their New Artist of the Year competition is Florida Georgia Line, Ariana Grande, Imagine Dragons and Phillip Phillips.
Macklemore Rounds Up His Five Favorite Songs
Swift and Timberlake scored the second most nominations with five each. Swift and her Red LP are up for Favorite Female Artist and Album in the Pop/Rock and Country categories; while Timberlake received nods for Favorite Male Artist in both the Pop/Rock and Soul/R&B categories, with his record The 20/20 Experience competing for Favorite Album in both the Pop/Rock and Soul/R&B categories.
Timberlake will also go up against Robin Thicke in all those categories, except Favorite Pop/Rock Album, while his summer smash with Pharrell and T.I. “Blurred Lines” is up for Single of the Year against “Thrift Shop” and country duo Florida Georgia Line’s remix of “Cruise,” featuring Nelly.
Rihanna notched four AMA nominations, including the last slot in the Favorite Soul/R&B Album for her latest, Unapologetic. She will also compete against Swift and Pink for Favorite Female Artist – Pop/Rock, and against Ciara and Alicia Keys for Favorite Female Artist – Soul/R&B.
Macklemore and Lewis’ domination, meanwhile, continued in the hip-hop category where they’re up for Favorite Album for The Heist, against Jay Z‘s Magna Carta… Holy Grail and Kendrick Lamar‘s good kid, m.A.A.d city, and for Favorite Artist, against Jay and Lil Wayne.
