‘Glee’ May Relocate to New York
Fox is eyeing a big change of scenery for its smash musical series Glee. The network is in talks with series creators Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk and Ian Brennan to relocate the show’s setting permanently to New York City.
‘Glee’ Bids Farewell to Corey Monteith
According to TVLine, the series could make the switch even within the current fourth season, though production for the show itself will likely remain in Hollywood (barring on-location shoots). Glee‘s story is currently split between two cities: Lima, Ohio (home to McKinley High School) and New York, where Rachel (Lea Michele), Kurt (Chris Colfer) and Santana (Naya Rivera) currently reside.
Moving focus to the Big Apple could create a tonal shift for the series, though that could be welcome: Glee has been in a transitional state this season, following the drug-related death of costar Cory Monteith in July. Murphy spoke with TVLine this month about the grieving period, noting that it’s been “hard in the writers’ room” trying to carry the show forward creatively. However, Murphy showed optimism earlier this month, speaking to reporters at a press conference at Los Angeles’ Paley Center that honored the FX Networks (home to American Horror Story, which he also created).
“I have a good idea,” he said, speaking about the Glee series finale. “I’m going to tell the studio and the network [in a week] how, after Cory’s unfortunate passing, we can end the show that I think is very satisfactory. And kind of in his honor, which I love.”
“The final year of the show. . . was designed around Rachel and Cory/Finn’s story,” Murphy continued, referring to Lea Michele’s character, Rachel Berry. “I always knew that, I always knew how it would end. I knew what the last shot was, he was in it. I knew what the last line was – she said it to him. So when a tragedy like that happens, you sort of have to pause and figure out what you want to do, so we’re figuring that out now.”
