Netflix’s ‘Daredevil’ Series Swings Into April Premiere
Netflix will debut all 13 episodes of Daredevil, its series based on the Marvel comic, on April 10th as part of the stacked spring schedule it announced at the Television Critics Association winter press tour, NME reports.
Daredevil stars British actor Charlie Cox (Stardust, Boardwalk Empire) as Matt Murdock. In the original comics, Murdock was empowered, but blinded, at age 12 by a radioactive substance and began fighting crime as Daredevil after his father refused to throw a boxing match. The new adaptation marks the first installment of Marvel’s Defenders franchise, which will also include individual shows centered around Jessica Jones, Iron Fist and Luke Cage. Eventually they’ll all come together for an Avengers-style mini-series, The Defenders.
Along with Daredevil, Netflix also announced the March 6th premiere of Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, a new comedy from Tina Fey and her longtime 30 Rock cohort Robert Carlock. The show stars Ellie Kemper (The Office) as a woman who escapes a doomsday cult and begins to rebuild her life in New York City. The show was initially slated to air on NBC, but was later sold to Netflix, where it was picked up for two seasons.
Also on the docket is Bloodline, a drama about four siblings whose secrets resurface when their estranged brother returns home. The show premieres March 20th and boasts a strong ensemble cast that includes Kyle Chandler, Linda Cardellini, Ben Mendelsohn, Sam Shephard and Sissy Spacek.
And finishing out the streaming service’s slate of new spring shows in Grace and Frankie, premiering May 8th. The show stars Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin as the titular frenemies whose husbands — played by Martin Sheen and Sam Waterston — fall in love and get married.
As if Netflix’s schedule of new shows wasn’t overwhelming enough, viewers will have even more to binge watch with the impending returns of The Fall on January 16th and House of Cards on February 27th. The streaming service also announced that it has renewed its historical drama Marco Polo for a second season.
