Cyndi Lauper’s musical Kinky Boots leads Tony Awards nominees with 13 nods, including Best Musical and Best Original Score. The adaptation of the cross-dressing comedy film boasts an original score by Lauper and a book by Harvey Fierstein, and is also up for Best Book of a Musical, Best Choreography and Best Orchestrations, among other categories.

Matilda, a musical adaptation of Roald Dahl’s novel, followed with 12 nominations, including Best Musical. Bring It On: The Musical, based on the 2000 cheerleader comedy film, is also up for the Best Musical category, as is the adaptation of A Christmas Story, the Musical. Berry Gordy’s Motown: The Musical, which has been critically panned but commercially successful, was notably omitted from the category. It did, however, pick up four nods, including Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role in a Musical for Valisia LeKae and Best Performance by an Actor in a Featured Role in a Musical for Charl Brown.
