See Ghostface, MF Doom and BadBadNotGood’s Retro-Futuristic ‘Ray Gun’ Video
Ghostface Killah, the most reliable member of the recently reunited Wu-Tang Clan, has released the first video off Sour Soul, his upcoming collaboration with BadBadNotGood, the Toronto jazz-funk crew best known for their tracks with Odd Future. The track, “Ray Gun,” reunites the rapper with MF Doom, his occasional, and comparably loquacious sparring partner.
The clip, directed by Rob Schroeder of Lodger Films, stars Odd Future and MellowHype rapper Left Brain playing the role of “the Mask.” The clip is suitably retro, fitting the aesthetic of recently dropped tracks and a statement that says Sour Soul was “inspired by 1960’s and Seventies music, taking inspiration from the recording techniques and production of that era.”
“The team at Lodger Films did a wonderful job creating and capturing a story to fit our song with Ghostface and DOOM,” BBNG drummer Alexander Sowinski tells Rolling Stone. “The video instantly transports you into a bizarre retro-futurist world as “the Mask” learns the rules of our planet and how they differ from his own.”
The clip should stand as good news for anyone awaiting the potential of a full Ghostface Killah and MF Doom collaboration album — something that’s been rumored for about a decade. In a recent Reddit AMA, Ghostface said the LP — under the name Doomstarks — will be out this year.
In the meantime, Sour Soul, which also features tracks with Danny Brown, Tree and Elzhi Due, is due February 24 on Lex Records.
