‘Jimmy Kimmel Live’ Preps Month of Live Musical Mash-Ups
Jimmy Kimmel Live will shake up its regularly scheduled musical performances this February with a new series, “Mash Up Mondays,” bringing together two artists for a special one-off gig.
“Mash Up Mondays” kicks off February 2nd with Weezer and ZZ Top — or as host Jimmy Kimmel re-dubbed them in a press release, “Wee-Z Top” — and continues February 9th with Haim and funk legends Morris Day and the Time (a.k.a. “Morris Day and the Haim”). On February 16th, rising soul star Aloe Blacc will take the stage with Nineties new jack swing heroes Blackstreet as “Aloe Blaccstreet.” No word yet on which pun-tastic pairing will close out the series on February 23rd.
Jimmy Kimmel Live ! has cultivated a reputation for airing unique musical bits, like the Decemberists’ fictional LP of musical YouTube comments, Meghan Trainor’s awkward Thanksgiving carols like “Grandma’s a Racist (Pass the Yams)” or Josh Groban’s moving performances of Kanye West’s most memorable tweets. Kimmel has also hosted a number of live concerts outside its studio on Hollywood Boulevard, featuring headliners like Justin Timberlake and Taylor Swift.
Kimmel himself is, of course, prone to getting in on the musical fun as well. After first breaking out with “I’m Fucking Ben Affleck,” the acclaimed follow-up to Sarah Silverman’s viral smash “I’m Fucking Matt Damon,” Kimmel has gotten dancing lessons from 11-year-old Maddie Ziegler and helped the Killers write their annual Christmas song, “Joel, the Lump of Coal.”
