Watch Spoon Perform Catchy, Jangly New Song ‘Satellite’
Spoon released their new album They Want My Soul last August, but the Austin indie rockers aren’t wasting time working on new material. At a December 16th concert at Albuquerque, New Mexico’s Sunshine Theatre, Britt Daniel and company debuted a new track titled “Satellite,” according to Setlist.fm. Two weeks later, the song reappeared during the group’s December 30th gig at Houston, Texas’ House of Blues, with one audience member capturing the performance on YouTube.
“Satellite” sounds like it was hatched out of the same creative sessions that produced They Want My Soul, one of Rolling Stone‘s 50 Best Albums of 2014. The catchy, jangly track features exemplary work from recent recruit Alex Fischel on keyboards. “When you’re feeling lonely, I’m your satellite,” Daniel sings, the chorus orbiting around the line “I know I love you more.”
After wrapping up their U.S. tour with a “Satellite”-less New Year’s Eve gig in Dallas, Spoon will travel to Australia in February for four concerts. After that, it’s unclear whether the band will quickly return to the studio to recapture the prolificacy that saw them release four studio albums between 2001 and 2007, or whether fans will have to endure another four-year wait like the gap between 2010’s Transference and They Want My Soul.
There’s also the possibility that “Satellite” is earmarked for Daniel and Fischel’s side project Divine Fits. Drummer Jim Eno spoke to Billboard in September and was asked whether another Spoon LP was on the way. “It’s hard to say,” Eno said. “I’m sure Britt and Alex will do another Divine Fits record. If that happens, we’re probably not going to do another Spoon record for two years, but we’ll see how it goes.”
