M83, ‘Oblivion’ Director Explain Concept Behind Film’s Music
M83 scored the new sci-fi thriller Oblivion, starring Tom Cruise, and in this clip bandleader Anthony Gonzalez and director Joseph Kosinski offer a look into the creative process. Kosinski was listening to M83 as he wrote the film’s story, and he was thrilled to bring the French shoegaze band onboard for the project. “It’s my first score, so I’m very excited about it,” Gonzalez says.

Kosinski calls M83’s music “cutting edge, but . . . also very emotional,” while Gonzalez describes his music as “very cinematic in a very electronic way.” The score is a collaboration between M83, Kosinski and Joseph Trapanese, and the trio sought to capture “power and epicness.”
“It felt original, which is all I wanted,” Kosinski says. “I wanted an original sound for an original film.” Oblivion opens April 19th.
