Jay-Z to Perform on Ed Sullivan Theater Marquee
It’s on: Jay-Z will perform atop the Ed Sullivan Theater‘s marquee on July 8th, four days after he releases his new album, Magna Carta Holy Grail.
Summer Tour Preview 2013: Jay-Z
A few days after plans for the “surprise” show were revealed, New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg has given the go-ahead for the outdoor show, which will likely draw a few tourists away from nearby Times Square. Jay will appear on The Late Show With David Letterman that night and previously performed on top of the building with Eminem in 2010. The marquee has also hosted concerts by Paul McCartney and Phish.
The concert is part of Jay-Z‘s promotional campaign for his new album, which will be released early to a million Samsung Galaxy smartphone owners. After releasing some lyric sheets to album cuts – one of which includes lyrics from Nirvana‘s “Smells Like Teen Spirit” – Hova also released a promotional clip in which he discusses daughter Blue Ivy’s inspiration for the song “Jay Z Blue.” You can see it below.
“It’s something that we both created; we still marvel at her. It’s most obvious on a song called ‘Jay Z Blue’ and it deals with, like, my pop left when I was young, so he didn’t teach me how to be a man, nor how to raise a child, or [how to] treat a woman, right?” he says while producer Rick Rubin naps nearby. “So of course, [with] my karma, the two things I need I don’t have, right? And I have a daughter.”
Magna Carta Holy Grail is out June 4th, or June 1st for Samsung Galaxy recipients.
