Snoop Dogg Gets Animated in ‘Let the Bass Go’ – Song Premiere
“He’s a slick-talking, slow-walking son of a snail,” Snoop Dogg tells Rolling Stone of Smoove Move, the mini mollusk character he voices in Turbo, the DreamWorks animated car-racing comedy to be released on July 17th. One typically associates the West Coast rap icon with G-funk more than G-rated flicks, but Snoop finds the connection organic. “They approached me about doing a voice in the movie, so I said, ‘Why not?'” he explains. “I love animated movies, and I’ve always been loved by the kids, but I didn’t know how to target that audience. This is the perfect way.”
Naturally, Snoop contributes a song to the film, too: “Let the Bass Go,” which plays over the closing credits and you can hear exclusively below. “That song came about because [DreamWorks Animation CEO] Jeffrey Katzenberg wanted something to end the movie with a lot of electricity and energy,” Snoop notes. Just as Turbo represents a new family-friendly film persona for him, the vintage drum-machine groove of “Let the Bass Go” is also “something different from what’s usually associated with Snoop Dogg,” he explains. “It’s something upbeat that everyone in the house can enjoy. I’m on my old-school rap style there: we took sounds from the Eighties like an 808 bass to give it that ‘Planet Rock’ and ‘Going Back to Cali’ feel. It was about paying homage, while at the same time taking the movie to the next level.”
