Cyndi Lauper’s ‘Kinky Boots’ Musical Wins Six Tonys
Kinky Boots, the musical from pop star Cyndi Lauper, won six Tony Awards last night, including Best Musical, Best Leading Man and Best Original Score. Lauper, a newcomer to Broadway, wrote the music and lyrics for the Broadway production, and Harvey Firestein wrote the book for the musical, which led the Tonys field with 13 nominations.
In her acceptance speech for Best Original Score, an obviously overwhelmed Lauper first thanked her mother for sharing her Broadway music with her and teaching her to sing. Lauper also thanked the cast and crew as well as her family and New York City.

“I understand how hard you work, and I’ve never been a stranger to hard work,” Lauper said. “And your hard work inspires me.”
Kinky Boots, inspired by the 2005 movie of the same name, centers on a factory owner who saves his failing business by transforming the company into a maker of fetish footwear for crossdressers.
Other winners from last night’s Tony Awards include Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike for Best Play and Matilda the Musical and Pippin with four awards each.
