‘SNL’ Plays on Sex Pistols in Margaret Thatcher Sketch
Punks and the British government aren’t supposed to get along, but in this Saturday Night Live short, Fred Armisen plays a Johnny Rotten-inspired rocker who has a soft spot for Margaret Thatcher. Armisen is the frontman of Ian Rubbish and the Bizzaros, a band opposed to police, the queen and the niceties of polite society. Against the odds, though, the contrarian Rubbish loves the Iron Lady.

After Thatcher took office, the rest of the band figured Thatcher was ripe for skewering. “I remember thinking, I said, ‘Look out, Margaret Thatcher. You’re about to get Rubbished,'” says bassist Derek Gash, played by Bill Hader. But it turns out Rubbish is cool with his new leader. “Hey Maggie Thatcher / You’re all right,” he sings. “Thanks to you I sleep at night.” The Sex Pistols‘ Steve Jones even makes a cameo, calling the group “unbelievable.”
