Guards on Their Dream Stage Setups
Guards are making their Coachella debut this year, and for the big stage, they have some ideas about how to take their show to the next level. “Our dream stage setup. . . just a lot of pyrotechnics, because you’re not allowed to really do that anymore,” quipped frontman Richie James Follin when the band stopped by Rolling Stone‘s Rock Room. “We saw Metallica at Orion Fest and that was terrifying.”

However, they don’t want their show to be totally aggressive. “[Another idea was having] a ton of balloons tied to everything, so everything’s kind of floating,” joked Follin. “Like the amps are floating off the air and the cymbals, you jump up and hit it.” That’d make things tough for drummer Loren Humphrey, who added, “It’s hard to play drums.”
