The Besnard Lakes Trip Out in ‘People of the Sticks’ – Premiere
Known for their soothing soundscapes, dreamy vocals and flowing rhythms, Canadian rockers the Besnard Lakes are back this week with their fourth studio album, Until in Excess, Imperceptible UFO on Jagjaguwar. Its single “People of the Sticks” is a beautifully smooth musical journey with a perfect touch of transportive rock, and that vibe is captured perfectly in its video.

The clip, directed by Joseph Yarmush and Petros Kolyvas, shows a young gymnast being given four Mentos-looking candies – each with the face of a Besnard band member – by a bald, bearded man. The pills take her on a trip that is beautiful and colorful, and somehow also improves her abilities on a high beam. Though the experience morphs into a bad trip at one point, the hues turning an intimidating red as the bearded drug pusher laughs maniacally, the overall experience is quite positive and captivating.
The Besnard Lakes’ co-founder Jace Lasek has similar high-flying aspirations for their records, as he tells Rolling Stone: “We want our albums to be an escape – the drug – that sends you into that clouded void you enter where nothing matters and everything seems ok, finally, forever.”
