Old 97’s Singer Rhett Miller Damages Voice, Resorts to Twitter
Rhett Miller blew out his voice last weekend at an Old 97’s gig in Dallas, resulting in hemorrhaged vocals cords that will require him to keep quiet for a week. The voiceless singer, who had to cancel a handful of solo shows in New York state, has resorted to Twitter to explain his condition.

“This vocal cord situation is crazy. It feels like I have a cherry tomato stuck in my voice box,” tweeted Miller, who was performing at the 20th anniversary celebration of Dallas venue the Barley House when he damaged his vocal cords. “And not talking? How does one do that?”
So far Miller’s enforced silence hasn’t affected any Old 97’s gigs, which are scheduled to resume May 17th at the Forth Worth Music Festival in Texas. Miller’s next solo gig is scheduled for April 18th at the Hamilton in Washington D.C. Despite the singer’s disappointment at nixing a couple of appearances in the Hudson Valley, Miller seemed to be in good spirits.
“Upside to vocal cord damage? More tweeting! Maybe I should find a bad kids’ movie and just go to town on it . . .,” Miller tweeted. “Not being allowed to talk makes me realize just how much I must talk when I am allowed. How does anyone put up with me?”
